The 2008 Olympic Games boxing competition broke a number of records during its 15-day competition at the Workers’ Gymnasium as per the following:

• Best split (nine countries winning a gold medal out of a possible 11) of individual countries winning gold. 1988 and 1996 saw nine countries win gold but 12 gold medals were on offer.
• First and second Olympic boxing gold medals and first silver medal for China
• First Olympic boxing gold and silver medals for Mongolia
• Felix Diaz won the only gold medal for the Dominican Republic at the 2008 Games and the first boxing gold medal in the Dominican Republic’s history when he won the 64kg light welterweight title
• First Olympic boxing medals for Armenia, India and Mauritius
• USA records its worst ever medal return in the Olympics ahead of its previous worst-ever showing of a single silver medal in 1948.
• First time Cuba go home without any gold medals since 1968 (excluding 1984 and 1988 when it boycotted)
• First time since 1920 France has won three Olympic boxing medals
• First Olympic boxing medals for Ireland since 1992
• Only medals at the 2008 Olympic Games for Moldova and Mauritius
