APB Executive Board meets in Bangkok

07.07.2012
A little more than 3 months after its last meeting when it approved the APB and BMA business plan, the AIBA Professional Boxing Executive Board gathered this Saturday 7 July in Bangkok, Thailand, just 24 hours before the AIBA Executive Committee meeting kicks off.

The gathering was essentially an opportunity to go through a progress report on APB work including boxers selection, ranking, development of database, Technical & Competition Rules, equipment, competition schedule, scoring system, medical and officials.

All AIBA boxers have now been evaluated through the AIBA World Boxing Championships Baku 2011 and the 2012 AIBA Continental Olympic Qualifying Events. The Top 8 of each weight category have been determined and three of them have already signed: Magomedrasul Medzhidov from Azerbaijan (91+kg), Kazakh Serik Sapiyev (69kg) and Jonghun Shin from Korea (49kg). Another former World Champion and Olympic silver medalist is expected to contract with APB before the London 2012 Olympic Games. A certain number of current pro boxers have also expressed their great interest in joining APB.

Also, AIBA President proposed the appointment of Mr Osvaldo Bisbal as Chairman of the APB R&J Commission; a nomination that was approved unanimously. Mr Bisbal has now the duty to form a Commission that will be fully independent from the AIBA R&J Commission.

Although not directly linked to APB but fundamental in its success, a presentation on the Boxing Marketing Arm SA (BMA) was also proposed to the APB EB members. BMA is an external commercial company whose mission is to enhance the commercial values of AIBA's three competition programs - AOB, WSB, APB - by maximizing marketing revenues across all areas.

Main objectives for 2012/2013, short and long term strategy, approach to answer the needs of boxers, fans and sponsors, implementation and structure were covered by explaining the goals and projects of BMA in terms of media, marketing, Fitness Boxing, athletes' representation and finance/administration.

The next big step for APB will now be the approval of its Technical & Competition Rules by the AIBA Executive Committee in the next three days.

Chaired by Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA President, the APB Executive Board includes Dr Abdellah Bessalem (Algeria), Mr Bekzhan Bektenov (Kazakhstan), Mr Osvaldo Bisbal (Argentina), Mr Luiz Boselli (Brazil), Mr Franco Falcinelli (Italy), Dr Humbert Furgoni (France) and Dr Tom Virgets (USA). Mr David Francis (Wales), as AIBA Treasurer and Mr Ho Kim, as AIBA Executive Director, are non-voting members.
