With women's boxing making its long awaited debut at the Olympic Games this summer in the British capital, the media interest in the athletes that will grace the canvas at the ExCeL London has been enormous. The world renowned Vogue magazine, published across the globe, was the latest addition to have had a keen interest. In this month's issue, Nathaniel Rich portrays the promising US Flyweight Marlen Esparza.
Soon-to-be 23-year-old Esparza is one of the rising stars of the world of boxing and it has been one of her lifetime ambitions to box at the Olympic Games. She has been training extra hard in order to not let her chance, on the biggest stage of all, slip her by.
At the recent AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships in China, the fledgling orthodox fighter saw her journey end at the quarter-final stage where she lost to local favourite and eventual winner, multiple-World Champion Cancan Ren. Esparza will have learnt a lot from her experience in Qinhuangdao and will now been seeking to at least make it onto the podium at the Olympic Games.
