Boxing Family mourns Jerzy Kulej | 18.07.2012 | Polish boxing legend Jerzy Kulej passed away on Saturday 13 July 2012 in Warsaw at the age of 71. Born on 19 October 1940 in Czestochowa (Poland), the former Light Welterweight (64kg) was a double Olympic Champion (Tokyo 1964 and Mexico City 1968), a two-time European Champion (Moscow 1963 and East Berlin 1965), a silver medallist at the European Championships (Rome 1967) and an eight times National Champion.
AIBA President, Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, declared: "Poland has a tradition of producing great boxers and it is with a great sadness that we learnt that one of their best exports passed away. Jerzy Kulej will remain a true legend of our sport".
"He was not only an outstanding boxer, but also a great friend of ours. His death leaves us, his sporting family, with a great sorrow", stated Mr Jerzy Rybicki, President of the Polish Boxing Association.
